Skincare Do’s and Don’ts

Skincare is an essential aspect of our daily routine. Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and it is essential to take care of it properly.

However, with the amount of skincare products available on the market, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. In this blog, we will discuss some of the essential do's and don'ts of skincare that can help simplify your routine and promote healthy, happier skin.

1. Not Drinking Enough Water

Water is essential for your body, and it is essential for our skin as well. Not drinking enough water can lead to dry, flaky, and dull skin. It is recommended to drink at least eight glasses of water every day which is about 2 litres. Drinking enough water helps to keep our skin looking plump and hydrated, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Additionally, water helps to flush toxins out of our bodies, which can also help to keep our skin looking clear and healthy.

2. Not Washing Your Hands Enough

Our hands come into contact with a lot of germs and bacteria throughout the day, and if you touch your face with dirty hands, it can lead to breakouts and other skin issues. It is essential to wash your hands regularly, especially before touching your face. By washing your hands with warm water and Ovelle’s Hygienic Hand Wash for at least 20 seconds, with you can stop the transfer of bacteria and germs. You can also use a hand sanitiser such as Ovelle’s Advanced Hand Sanitiser Gel, if soap and water are not available.

3. Not Wearing Sunscreen Daily

Sun damage is one of the leading causes of premature aging, skin cancer, and other skin issues. Not wearing sunscreen daily is one of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to skincare and anti-aging. Even on cloudy days, harmful UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds and damage your skin. It is recommended to use a suncream with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even if you're indoors. Apply it generously to your face, neck, hands and any other exposed areas of your skin.

You can shop all your SPF needs from Elave Sun which includes factor 30, 45and 50 SPFs, along with a Paediatric SPF50 created for new borns. Its hypo-allergenic formula helps shield delicate skin from harmful UVA, UVB and infrared (IR) rays and absorbs 98% of UVB radiation that causes sunburn.

4. Using the Wrong Products for Your Skin Type

Using the wrong skincare products for your skin type can often do more harm than good. If you have oily skin, for example, using a heavy moisturizer can clog your pores and lead to breakouts.

Elave’s Skin Balancing Moisturiser and Elave's Skin Balancing Cleansing Gel’s oil free formula is perfect for oily skin, removing make-up and impurities from the skin.

On the other hand, if you have dry skin, using a harsh exfoliant can strip away your skin's natural oils and leave it feeling tight and uncomfortable. To avoid these problems, it's important to choose products that are specifically formulated for your skin type such as Elave’s Hydrating Cream Cleanser and Elave's Intense Moisture Surge to deliver all day hydration for dry/ normal skin type. If you're not sure what your skin type is, talk to a dermatologist or skincare professional for advice.

5. Not Washing Your Pillowcase Enough

Believe it or not, your pillowcase can have a big impact on the health of your skin. When you sleep, your skin secretes oils and sweat, which can build up on your pillowcase over time. If you don't wash your pillowcase regularly, you could be exposing your skin to all kinds of bacteria and germs. To keep your skin healthy and clear, it's important to wash your pillowcase at least once a week, or more frequently if you have acne-prone skin.

6. Your skincare routine is in the wrong order

The order in which you apply your skincare products is important. If you don't apply them in the right order, you may not get the full benefits of the products. Here's the correct order:

  1. Cleanser: Removes dirt, oil, and makeup from your skin.
  2. Toner: Helps to balance the pH of your skin and prepares it for the next steps.
  3. Treatment products: These include serums, acne treatments, and other targeted treatments.
  4. Eye cream: Hydrates and protects the delicate skin around your eyes.
  5. Moisturizer: Locks in moisture and helps to protect your skin from external aggressors.
  6. Sunscreen: Protects your skin from the sun's harmful rays.

7. Overcomplicating your skincare routine

One common mistake that many people make is overcomplicating their skincare routine. It's easy to get caught up in the latest skincare trends or feel like you need to use a long list of products to achieve results, but this can actually do more harm than good. Too many products or steps in your routine can cause irritation, dryness, or even breakouts. Instead, keep your routine simple and streamlined. Focus on the basics of cleansing, moisturising, and protecting your skin. It’s about quality, not quality.

Remember: Great quality products do not need to come with a hefty price tag.

8. Not being consistent in your skincare routine

Consistency is key when it comes to skincare. You can't expect to see results if you only use your skincare products sporadically. It's important to use your products consistently and stick to a routine that works for you.

9. Ignoring your neck

While many of us focus on our face and forget about the neck, this delicate area is actually just as important. The skin on your neck is thinner and more prone to damage, and can quickly show signs of aging if not properly cared for. So, make sure to extend your skincare routine down to your neck, using gentle products and being careful not to tug or pull on the skin.

Elave’s Rejuvenating Night Treatment and Elave's Rejuvenating Cleansing Treatment include glycolic acid which rejuvenates skin, promotes collagen synthesis and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Neglecting this area can result in an uneven complexion and premature aging, so don't forget to show your neck some love!

10. Not Removing Makeup Before Bed

Finally, one of the most important things you can do for your skin is to remove your makeup before bed. When you leave makeup on overnight, it can clog your pores and lead to breakouts. Additionally, makeup can trap dirt and bacteria against your skin, which can cause inflammation and other skin issues. Removing all makeup from your face often requires a double cleanse.

In conclusion, taking care of your skin is about more than just using the right products. It's about making good choices throughout your day, from drinking enough water to washing your hands frequently. By following these skincare do's and don'ts, you can help keep your skin healthy, radiant, and youthful-looking. By incorporating these simple habits into your daily routine, you can achieve healthy and happier skin.

Many factors, extrinsic and intrinsic, play a part in achieving and maintaining healthy skin. As the largest organ in the body, skin plays a key role in protecting us from micro-organisms, dehydration, ultraviolet light and mechanical damage. When the dermal barrier is compromised, it negatively impacts our general good health.
